I have been on friendly terms with the

complainants for ame years, and as a matter of fact they hare visited me at my house elsewhere, to say nothing of the friend- -ly reception I have received when officially calling at their

houses, which must have been many times during the last five

or six years.

With respect to what happened on the evening

in question I must admit that I had been entertained by several

friends during the latter part of the afternoon, and on going through East Street, and passing complafanta houses thought I would call upon them. I visited both the shop at No. 40 and the

family house at No. 45 opposite, the inmates of both places

being well known to me.

If by going into these houses, the people,

knowing my official posizion, thought I intended to annoy then,

it was certainly not ry wish or intention.

I wish to state again I considered these

people friendly to me, and if I was somewhat forceful in r

behaviour I sincerely regret it.
